CHARCO NEWS
First of all the Best Wishes for the New Year. December was cold in Northern Europe. Here in Charco we had some rain and the days around Christmas a lot of sun. But at the end the wind rose up and Boxing Day was very windy with the Calima, blowing in from the east. So we had to stay at home like you in England. Wich gave me the time to work on this newsletter. Because of the rain a lot of plants popped up and that’s why we had a kind of green Christmas and even a day longer. Normally the Spaniards have one day off and now they had two. (good for them).
Alan told you a lot about the history or our village. I’d like to put some people living in Charco in the spotlight.4

ANN DYCK
I want to start with Ann. She was born in Belgium, moved to Ireland and has lived in Charco del Palo now for six years. She is a plant expert and artist. She creates beautiful plants in pots and also organises walks, showing edible and medicinale plants. Here is her story: Since I was four I have been fascinated with weeds growing in the garden and surrounding wildlife. This grew into a passion over the years and working with plants all my life in different countries. I am now specialized in medicinal plants on Lanzarote. It looks dry up here but there are many edible plants which are good for our health. Around Charco del Palo there are more than forty different plants. Mother nature gives us these plants for free, each plant comes with a mission. There is a plant for every issue. Let’s be grateful!! getting to know them is like having good friends around you! – Would you like to know more about plants & flowers growing on Lanzarote? – Would you like to know how to use the medicinal & healing plants that grow in they area where you live? -Would you like to find out which flowers & plants are edible and can be used in salads & food dishes? – And those that can be used for many other purposes and benefits.
Let me guide you to the world of plants…. Tel: 0034 657762160. email: annmarcelladyck@gmail.com
RESTAURANTS AND SUPERMARKET
Obona have some water issues and that’s why the restaurant is closed. Ute, the woman who is in charge, said they will be open up again somewhere in January. The new barbecue at the Tropical attracts more and more costumers. You can sit in the garden as well. At La Plazita you can have breakfast, coffee and tapas. Try the date-salad it is delicious. Lilly’s bar has also a new dish: ‘the Duck salad’. Jummmie. There is a new shop assistant in the SUPERMARKET. She is young, wants to learn all the languages and bring new energy to the place. Cammelo put some new showcases in the shop and the bread is now in different baskets. They have organic bread from Guatiza ‘Maya bread‘, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and on Thursday you can order bread from the bakery ‘Andy’ the organic German bakery. In the list outside the shop you can choose what you want, even pastry.
WALKS
In the winter times, when the temperature is a bit lower its a good time to walk. As everybody knows from Charco you can walk in different directions. Close to our village naked, and closer to other villages you put something on. For me, the walk to ‘the Ruin’ above Charco on the right side is a beautiful walk at the end of the day. The afternoon sunlight turns the pealing paint into a nice and bright orange. A special atmosphere to be there for a while and imagine how people would have lived there for many years. Every year more and more paint and stones peels of from the walls, but it is a beautifully place to make pictures. Its not far to Guatiza from there. El Bulin, repainted the bar and from the early morning till the late evening you can drink and eat something small there or go to the Sociedad (behind the church) for a cheap but good meal. A walk back in the dark over de hills is a special experience.

CULTURAL LANZAROTE .
MALABHARIA
In january Haria, the local government, organize a special event every year. Circus theater acts with participants from all over the world. It’s really amazing what you can see in this small village.
