*We are having fine weather in February. The temperature has been twenty degrees plus. Even a few days above 25 degrees. That is exceptional and much warmer than last year. LANZAROTE NEWS
Lanzarote ‘s Cabildo has announced that the Atlantic Museum will be re-opened again. The Atlantic Museum is an underwater installation of scores of life – size sculptures off the coast of Playa Blanca. It will included among the islands list of tourist attractions. In 2014 invited the Cabildo the Britisch sculptor Jason the Caires Taylor to create the Atlantic Museum. The museum was officially opened in 2016. In 2019 it was removed from the list of tourist attractions because there was an other coalition in charge. The horse sculptures from Arrecife were also removed because they did not reflect the legacy of Cesar Manrique.
Divers can visit the underwater Museum. Whether it will charge admission fees remain to be seen.

Carnival in Lanzarote
If you like Carnival, come to Lanzarote. Six weekends of partying. Probably the only place in the world, while many are ‘fasting’, they continue to celebrate Carnival here.
The story goes that Franco banned Carnival but the Canary Islands found their own solution to get around it. They organised parties under a different name and then from village to village. This is still the case.
The spectacle started this year in Arrecife on February 12 and will end on La Graciosa on March 16. This year there are beautiful parades and many dancing beauties. We had our Carnival in Charco at La Plazita and Haria. Haria was a big parade with a lot of dancers, music, dressed up people and trucks. Many many people came to watch and celebrate.
There is still a chance to see and enjoy the Carnival in March.

The turtle
I was sitting on the monkey rock, hidden in my book, when I was startled by a commotion. At the stairs there were a number of people who let out terrified screams. As I got closer I saw something on the ground. A torn plastic potato bag in which a turtle appeared to be trapped. Plastic wires around its head and legs from which the poor animal could not free itself. One leg hung paralyzed. The plastic wire had also been twisted around the head several times. Someone had fished the poor animal out of water. There were sounds of alarm on all sides. We were confronted with what our waste can do to marine life. A knife was produced but it was blunt. Then someone brought a pair of very small scissors with which the plastic was cut off, thread by thread. The animal let it all happen. Careful women’s fingers worked feverishly until all the threads were loose. It was a miracle that he was still able to breathe. He moved his head and a sigh of relief was heard by the crowd that had formed. He was still alive and moving again. The turtle was carefully placed back in the water. It was an emotional event. I didn’t take any pictures either, that didn’t occur to me because I was so moved. However, when the animal regained its freedom, I also jumped into the water and followed him while I was full of emotion. He could still swim and one paralyzed leg was also used again to swim into his future. I’m sure if he hadn’t been freed he wouldn’t have survived. Greetings to you, dear animal. WALKS: THE CORONA AND THE CALDERA CRATER
In the north everyone knows the Corona crater: it is always present in its beauty. A walk there is easy and well worth the effort. It is a majestic presence and the colors are different every season. We once walked around the top along the corona/edge, but that is now prohibited. Nor can you descend into the crater. Still, the view when you reach the top is very beautiful. It is also an easy climb. A short walk with a steep ascent at the end.
Drive to the village of ‘Ye’ north of Haria.
In Ye, 100 meters past the church, a path starts on the right between the grape fields, follow the path. Keep left at a fork. You will arrive at the crater. Enjoy the view of the crater and the surrounding area. You can even see La Graciosa. Walk back at leisure and visit the supermarket with a small terrace a little further into the village.
The Corona is in line with two other craters, the los Helechos and the Caldera. The Caldera is also a beautiful crater, which few people visit, but where you can descend into the crater. It is located in the national park: ‘Archipiélago Chinijo’ above Máguez. If you are in the north, I recommend that you also visit this place.
From the Corona you drive back to Máguez. There you take the first road on the right, Calle la Caldera. This newly restored road has many viewpoints with signs providing information about the area. Follow this road until you see caves and the mouth of the Caldera on the right. Park there in the corner. Follow the path for about a hundred meters to the crater. You can walk down there to experience what it is like to be in a crater. Go and experience it and climb to the caves on the way back before continuing. If you continue along the road you will reach the top of the Risco, the Mirador la Caldera, with a great view of Graciosa. It is also nice to walk around there.
