Roque de la Bonanza El Hierro
Hope you have a good Easter. It’s already April, so it’s getting a bit quieter in Charco del Palo. Snowbirds return home. Island residents take a break. So we went to El Hierro. It is a bit greener there than here and it is a nice island for a short holiday. That’s why this time some information about el Hierro, but in the footsteps of Cesar Manrique.
CHARCO NEWS
*The supermarket has expanded its range of organic products. And there is now a wider choice of ready-made meals, and when la plazita is closed you can order coffee.
*New: There is a bus connection (with taxi) from ‘centro commercial’ Charco to Mala, from where you can take other bus services to Arrecife.

*New in Charco, Helpdesk and outside Cinema. Inga and Elska are now temporarily living in our garage and they have found new inspiration. They have started a helpdesk, help for whatever problems arise. They will try to find solutions for you. Such as online check-in, problems with your phone or tablet, cleaning or caring for your garden or house. When we were on holiday they’ve painted our terrace and took good care for our house, when we arrived back home the house was clean and the plants were blooming lushly.
They also created the first samples of a Charco del Palo merchandise line. Such as wine, chocolatebars, t-shirts, and postcards. They have special labels like this one: ‘let’s get naked and share a glass of wine – charco del palo -.’
If you like movies, there is an outdoor cinema. They will regularly offer films that will be shown on our terrace, the entrance is based on donation. See announcement on the posters. More info: 0031 618525178

LANZAROTE NEWS
*The entrance fee to Timanfaya National Park has been increased to €20. There was talk of it being reduced to €6, but the Lanzarotians did not agree with this. Giving away the most beautiful tourist attraction for six euros was not a good idear. The tickets are available online and valid for three months
*Too many tourists! More and more tourists are coming to Lanzarote. It’s getting full. There will be problems with preserving nature and the freedom we always had at tourist places. For example, people have swum at Jameos de Aqua and climbed on volcanoes, causing the picon to sink and thus damaging them. There is talk that there will be a need for more guards or that hiking trails will be closed. This is a shame because a walk through, for example, a desolate moon landscape, gives you that ‘Lanzarote feeling’. Let’s remind each other that we care for the beautiful landscape of Lanzarote.
*In March the international sailing world championship regatta took place again at Playa Blanca. This time it was about qualification for the Olympic Games.
Volcan el Cuervo
WALKS:
In the south near the Timanfaya it is also nice to walk. We recently visited the crow crater. The 'volcano Cuervo'. A beautiful walk that takes you right into the middle of the crater. The colors in the crater edges are particularly visible at the end of the afternoon.
Opposite this crater, the ‘Montana Colorado’ is also a special mountain to walk around and there are also many hiking trails in the area. We took an evening walk there during the full moon. Was special. Because at this craters also people are climbing, maybe the parking lot is already closed. But now I hope you can still go there.
How do you get there? from Teguise, direction San Bartolome the LZ30. Continue straight past Mozaka and ‘casa de museo de campesino’ towards la Geria. Keep going straight until you reach the Timanfaya National Park exit. Turn right there. After a few hundred meters you enter the municipality of Tias. A little past that there is a parking lot on the left. From that parking lot you walk to the ‘volcano Cuervo’. You can also walk around the volcano, at the outside. Total duration then one and a half to two hours. (Don’t climb) If you walk back, the red side of the ‘Colorado mountain’ is clearly visible. Drive a bit and then there is a parking lot on the right, from where you can walk around ‘volcano Colorado’, and other paths.
EL HIERRO
El Hierro is the smallest Canary Island with a population of 12,000. Lanzarote 165.000. Nature is greener because there is more rain, and the mountains are higher, 1500 meters. The road network is good and a lot has been done for tourists. There are many walking routes, sea swimming pools and viewpoints. You can get there by plane via Tenerife or Gran Canaria or by ferry. There is a small but modern airport where you can eat tapas.
Cesar Manrique also left his mark in El Hierro. We discovered a beautiful sea swimming pool and sea boulevard at Caleta, which is close to the airport. At La Frontera (Las Puntas) there is a recreation area and a house designed by Cesar and the icing on the cake is the viewpoint ‘Mirador de la Peña’ with a view of Frontera and the opening of the tunnel that connects the north with the south. Beautiful buildings as only Cesar Manrique can do. Completely at one with the surrounding nature.
A tourist passport is also available that gives you access to tourist information places and sights. There are not many restaurants yet and people eat late, often open from seven in the evening, but you can find bread everywhere, including at gas stations. We enjoyed very beautiful walks in nature, the peace and the care that is certainly available to the few tourists.
