After a couple of windy months, now suddenly a quiet week, wind wise: what a relief. A beautiful, smooth sea and even dolphins have been spotted again. This is the beautiful Lanzarote that we appreciate so much. Now it is a wonderful time for cycling and walking.

*Yesterday we received the message from the Ayuntamiento of Haría that another ‘Oktoberfest’ will be held next Saturday, October 5th. The party starts at 12 noon with a program full of music, food, drinks and games for the children. Like last year, the Oktoberfest will take place in the square in front of the Centro Comercial, and will last until about 10 pm.

*La plazita is closed for holidays till 23 of October.

*Theo is back again, so every Thursday music at the Jardin Tropical and Saturday and Sunday at Lilli’s.

*There have been problems in the communication with the municipality about restoration work, but a new council has been installed in Haria, and in August they have been to make an inventory of what needs to be done. Let’s hope something will happen soon. If you want to help, Welcome.

*there are still problems with the water supply. Some days there is no water.

LANZAROTE NEWS

*Arrieta has a new lunchroom, opposite Amanecer in a brand new location. They serve breakfast and lunch.

*Joachim and his brother Pepe managed to grow organic vegetables, fruits and flowers in dry lanzarote for many years. Every Saturday they sold their products  at the market in Haria. We enjoyed taking advantage of them. Now they are retiring, unfortunately for the many customers. But hats off to them for what they brought all these years. Thank you.

*From 1 October 2024, a lot will change for everyone travelling to Spain. The Spanish government is introducing new rules (already adopted in 2021, but only now active) that focus on safety and surveillance. This means that as a traveller you will have to share more personal information than ever before

*The petrol price in Lanzarote is currently (20 Sept) very low €1.06.9 This is at the Gran Mall in Arrecife. Others are around €1.15 for 1 litre of petrol.

*Did you know that you don’t have to be a resident to walk the dogs at SARA? (animal shelter centre). Many tourists also make the trip to the shelter in Tahiche to help, often in conjunction with a visit to César Manrique’s famous house nearby.

LANZAROTE AND TOURISM

Lanzarote is trying to manage the ever-increasing flow of tourists. Unfortunately, this means that vulnerable areas are now no longer or less accessible to tourists. At Mirador del Rio the car park is now especially for the visit to Mirador. And even if you want to walk on the cliff to look at La Graciosa, this is forbidden. The parking spaces that were still there along the cliff are also closed. Too bad, because it is a magical view. But driving or biking on the beautiful road is still possible.

*The council of Lanzarote has launched the “Ten Commandments of Tourism” as part of a campaign to inform visitors about “responsible and ethical tourism”.The campaign aims to promote “appreciative, respectful and protective behaviour” among tourists and to reduce “attitudes that can contribute to tourism phobia”.

The Ten Commandments are as follows:

1. Artificial Intelligence estimates that the world has almost a million islands. And you have chosen ours, Lanzarote. We thank you and welcome you, and we invite you to take care of it and love it as much as we do here.
2. Move respectfully. Do not leave your footprints in places that have been created by by lava, wind and ocean.
3. Save water. It is the most precious commodity on an island punished by drought, and which has shown heroic determination in managing the scarce rainfall and humidity.
4. Let yourself be rocked. Let the only music that accompanies you be the symphony of the waves against the shore, the whistle of the trade winds and the murmur of your steps on the paths of gravel and sand.
5. Leave no litter. Let your gaze fall only on the volcanoes, the Malpaises, the vineyards and the white of the popular architecture.
6. Be careful and attentive when walking along the paths. You are in an environment with incredible biodiversity that must be protected.
7. Stones, plants and marine materials are part of the landscape that should be kept in its entire splendor. Look for your souvenirs in the shops, not in nature.
8. Treat yourself to local crafts and taste the products of the land and the sea. For their quality, for their freshness and because Canarian gastronomy will take you to heaven.
9. Be generous and treat the people who welcome you with open arms well.
10. Real merit lies in the way you explore the world. If you are one of those travelers who clap your hands upon arrival to celebrate your arrival at a new destination, how about clapping your hands upon departure?

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF CESAR MANRIQUE

This time a visit to Mirador del Rio. We have often been there to admire the surroundings but never inside.

It is an ingenious construction, one of the most unique architectural creations of Cesar Manrique. He built a beautiful viewpoint at 470 meters high by creating a restaurant / viewpoint in the cliff. You can see the island of Graciosa, the Famara cliff and the national park ‘Archipelago Chinijo’. The round shapes of the restaurant in combination with the great view make it definitely worth a visit. Outside you can clearly see what an architectural feat it was to create something like this in a large rock. Cesar knew how to find the right places. Many visitors come to admire this spectacular view and his creation.

WALKS:  

The cliffs are always a great to enjoy fine views. This time we went to Maguez. Go from the village Haria towards Maguez, past the chicken grill restaurant. In Maguez the first street on the left takes you right among craters and nature. At the end turn left and than a bend to the right until a one-way road stops you. However, there is a blue arrow to the right. So turn right and a bit further you can park. Follow the path upwards. At the wall (see second photo) go around it on the left and at the top right towards the rock (thirth photo). Climb a bit higher and then you have another surprising view of Famara and the cliffs.

Pay attention on the way back because we just ended up on another higher path. Enjoy….

DAILY LIFE  

I love cycling and did so a lot during the holiday weeks in the forests and nature of the Netherlands. Here, however, the wind often stopped me. But now that the wind is not blowing so hard anymore, I take my chance. First with friends up hill via Tabayesco. To my surprise that was easy to do and after breakfast in Haria we went back via Ye. Admired the Corona volcano  but did not climb it. When I got home I became aware that the powerful energy of that volcano had indeed touched me. I felt the power in my whole body and realized that we live on a very special island here. So a week later I set off alone to try to reach Mirador del Rio by bike. Again but now more consciously along the Corona, greeting as a good friend. I arrived proudly at the northern point. Mirador del Rio. The view of La Graciosa is a surprise every time. So pure, so beautiful. The color shades of the ocean in combination with the sand and the volcanoes on La Graciosa touch me again and again. And then there are the cliffs where the sun’s rays shine over, alternating with shadows. Papagayo on the southern side and this in the north make Lanzarote for me like a pearl in the ocean. It was almost too much to take in. Completely full I flew back, most of the way downhill, to Charco where I still think back with a big smile on my bike ride. Even though it is more difficult to park at Mirador. Still, for the view don’t let it stop you but discover see and feel the beauty that we have here in the North.
