CHARCO NEWS

May was a quiet month in Charco. The people who were here enjoyed lots of sunshine but it was rather windy. The seawater is warming up again and Lanzarote is still a bit green and in the dunes you can even see purple flowers! It rained a few times, which means that the flowers still give the island a colourful aspect, where as usually in April and May it is already dry and brown.

We had friends visiting and the man wanted to experience the Lanzarote underwater world. That is why I included in this newsletter photos and a report by Eddy, who enjoyed diving near Charco.

LANZAROTE NEWS

*The price of petrol has dropped again. Now you pay € 0.98 per liter.
*Arrieta has a new parking space for campers
A space has been created for campers south of the restaurant parking space on the beach at Arrieta. There are always a lot of people who come to surf and they filled up all the places at the restaurant. And apparently more and more residents of Lanzarote are living in vans because they can no longer afford the housing costs. Besides, there is a huge housing shortage.

FAKE NEWS

News reports that are often untrue or exaggerated are mainly intended to collect ‘likes’. This is the case with a lot of news that is spread throughout the media, and there fore with the news about the Canary Islands. Below is an example. Source: Gazette.

in case you missed it: yesterday morning the Canary Islands apparently suffered a “major power outage” that “ravaged the islands and “left residents and tourists in the dark” – even though it was 11 o’clock in the morning! You would have missed it if you had been on Lanzarote or any of the other islands, except La Palma, where the lights went out for a few hours due to a power station failure.

It is a fairly normal occurrence on the islands – power cuts but they do happen occasionally. But that didn’t stop the British media, including The Times, The Sun, The Mirror, The Express, The Independent and Metro, from reporting on the event. They tried to tie it in with the huge power cut that hit Spain and Portugal a few weeks ago.
The reports are the latest in a series of false and sensational stories about the Canary Islands, which have raised concerns about mild weather warnings and peaceful demonstrations.
We don’t know why these stories have appeared recently. Is it a deliberate attempt to sabotage tourism in the Canary Islands? (If so, it certainly isn’t working).

Daily life

Diving in Lanzarote – a really great experience – by Eddy, a friend of ours.

“This year it finally happened, a trip to Lanzarote. Actually I am not really into travelling and certainly not into sitting in a plane for a long time. In addition, I have the necessary flight shame but last year I went diving in Egypt for the first time and I could no longer ‘defend’ my objections to going to Lanzarote with Roeli, my wife. When booking the plane tickets I bought off my conscientious objection by planting trees, so all signals were green to enjoy a wonderful week of beach, sea and sun.

When I did some research on what Lanzarote has to offer I inevitably ended up on websites of diving schools. There is a lot of choice in terms of diving schools and diving locations. There are various diving centres all over the east coast of the island; I was getting more and more excited……

My eye had fallen on Northdiving Arrieta, the most northerly diving centre. The days before the dive I had snorkeled a few times in Charco del Palo. Even while snorkeling the underwater life is already beautiful. I saw a small stingray and a huge school of small fish that moved through the water as one. I became more and more enthusiastic. Now you should know that I am quite spoiled when it comes to diving. Diving in the Netherlands and certainly in Zeeland or on the North Sea is great and last year I dived in Egypt, somewhere at the back of my mind there was a thought that diving in Lanzarote would be disappointing. I can now ‘reveal’: I was pleasantly surprised.

I did my first dive with Raúl, the owner of the diving center. I was allowed to choose where we would dive; my choice fell on Charco del Palo. A good choice as it turned out. After some climbing over the rocks with heavy diving gear, Raúl and I had a super nice dive. Clear water of 20 degrees and super good visibility (certainly compared to the dives in the Netherlands).During the first dive we already encountered several stingrays, one of which was very large (at least a meter long).

The dive site at Charco del Palo is characterized by the long rock ‘fingers’ that slowly disappear into the sea to a depth of 30 meters. In addition, there are several ‘caves’ that you can swim through.

After the first dive we did a second dive at the same spot, I was lucky. The water temperature of 20 degrees appears to be the ideal temperature for rays. So we saw many. Especially when they swim over the sandy bottom it is a beautiful sight, as if they are floating.

Two days later I made a third dive. This time just north of Charco del Palo, at the fishermen’s hut. The way into the water was not easy, climbing over rocks and watching out not to slip. Once in the water it was great. At a depth of about 20 meters there is a cave with a huge open space in the middle. In this cave a huge stingray was sleeping and in the cracks of the cave it was teeming with shrimps, a beautiful sight.

I  have been home for a few days now, but when I close my eyes and recall the images of the dives, I can only say that Lanzarote surprised me, diving there is just beautiful and above water it is great as well!”
