CHARCO NEWS
Although September is supposed to be less windy, quite strong winds persisted for a while. There were a few hot days in September. Now that the winds have eased somewhat, everything is being spruced up for the coming season. The first “winter guests” have already arrived. Welcome friends!
*Preparations for the Charco festival are in full swing. It will take place on October 3-4, this time with input from local residents. It will no longer be a “Oktoberfest”, but a “Fiesta Charco.” See program below.
*The Cueva Paloma now also serves breakfast.
*Several people have experienced biting fish in the duck pond. It turns out that if you have a wound or stand still in the water for a longer time, they sometimes bite you. The good news is that work on the pool will begin saterday October 11 and Sunday 12. There will be cleaning and renovation, including the removal of the “piranhas”.

*No new proprietor has yet been found for La Plazita.
*Charco is also partially part of the municipality of Teguise. We usually don’t notice much of this, but they’ve recently implemented a new communication system. Perhaps that’s the reason, but a sign has been posted warning people not to leave cigarette filters behind.
LANZAROTE NEWS
*The residents of Guatiza are protesting against the use of buggy tours through the village and on the municipality’s agricultural and rural roads, which are destroying them and causing serious damage to the flora and fauna due to the dust and noise they generate. This isn’t “active tourism,” it’s destructive tourism.
*A bus caught fire near Playa Blanca.
*There will be no Saborea Lanzarote Food Fair in Villa Teguise this year. The organizers have decided to hold it biennially. This is due to its great success, which makes it a major undertaking to manage everything properly. The next one will be held November 2026.
*Lanzarote has become the first of the Canary Islands to agree to the Canarian Government’s declaration of Renewable Energy Acceleration Zones for the installation of new solar panels and wind turbines.
IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF CESAR MANRIQUE
The Monument to the Farmers is a tribute to the efforts of the island’s farming community, thanks to their hard work in this arid region. Located at a crossroads in the village of Mozaga, the Monument to the Farmers is the work of the renowned César Manrique, who also designed most of the island’s monuments. You might not recognize it at first glance, but the monument is said to depict a farmer with a donkey and a camel.
It is said that Manrique used water tanks from old fishing boats to build this white structure, which stands 15 meters high on a rock. It stands on a plot of land that mimics the island’s characteristic olive groves. This monument is also known as the Monument to Fertility, as some of the metal from old fishing boats was used in its construction. A restaurant near the monument also attracts many visitors. It offers high-quality Canarian cuisine and a hall that can seat hundreds of people. The museum itself exhibits traditional crafts and everyday objects. Demonstrations of traditional crafts are sometimes held.
THE MYSTERY OF THE STARRY SKY
NASA is currently working to identify the object now passing through our galaxy. It’s called 3i ATLAS. 3 is the third time an external object has passed through our solar system (i stands for interstellar). It entered our solar system at high speed, likely passing behind the sun, and regularly changes its shape and trajectory. Scientists don’t know exactly what it is. It probably won’t pass close to Earth, but it remains a remarkable event.
And In Charco we can see the starry sky very well.
There are apps that can show the various star constellations. If you point your phone at the sky, you’ll be told exactly the name of a group of stars. The App is SkyViewFree.
And you can identify passing ships. The app is VESSELFINDER. It shows you the origin of passing ships and where they are going. I’m most surprised by the number of ships that sail past our village.

THE ‘LOVE BATH’
On Saturdays, we often go to Haria to buy vegetables, fruit, and organic products. It’s best to go early so you’re guaranteed a parking space. It’s a small market, and we always run into friends or acquaintances there. There is variably a warm hug and a chat. A friend said, “I experience it as a ‘LOVE BATH.’ Well, I agree. I was a bit down on a Saturday, but after a visit to Haria, I was completely refreshed.
And a while a go, Juan and Heike opened a lovely gallery. Opposite the “old Mercadillo,” the old market hall, a little further on in the village. They now have a permanent exhibition of their stunningly beautiful paintings: definitely worth a visit.
You can get delicious bocadillos at the old market hall, and later in the day, you can enjoy a delicious meal at an other part of Haria “La Puerta Verdes.” The owner even speaks a little Dutch.
