Extra Charco News This Time!
After having two “Oktoberfests,” this year we enjoyed something quite different — the ‘Fiestas Charco del Palo’. And that could be felt throughout the weekend. An Oktoberfest is more German and Lanzarote is something different. This time, the atmosphere was more relaxed — more like a village celebration. That doesn’t mean visitors weren’t welcome, but the atmosphere was more in line with what Charco stands for: peaceful and natural.
There was something for everyone — music, dancing, Rummikub, flamenco, acrobatics, and even a brass band. The face painting was a hit with both young and old.
The oldest residents of the village were honored as King and Queen: Angie and Siggi! Angie has lived here for many years, and Siggi has created many beautiful gardens in Charco.
There was also a tapas and dessert competition. Beate made a delicious ‘blätterteigstrudel mit Sauerkrautfüllung’, and Jum prepared a dessert with mango and special rice. Afterwards, everyone gathered around to taste the creations —and there was plenty for all.
The bands were fantastic, and lots of dancing filled the evenings. Antonio wrapped up the nights with his lively disco music. Locals and visitors mingled, laughed, and celebrated together — truly a wonderful event!

Charco del Palo Speech
Welcome to Charco del Palo, a unique corner of Lanzarote where freedom, community, and nature blend in perfect harmony.
Miguel Mota, local actor and painter, opens the 2025 festivities with heartfelt gratitude — not as a guest, but as a neighbor deeply connected to this paradise by the sea.
He reminds us that Charco del Palo is more than a place: it is a way of life. Surrounded by ocean, white sand, cacti, and volcanoes, this community breathes freedom, tolerance, and harmony. Here, people live naturally, respecting each other and the land, in a spirit of openness and collaboration. Its peaceful location ensures privacy without losing the sense of belonging.
Miguel recalls the origins of the village in the 1970s, when it was founded by Gregor Kaiser as the first naturist resort (1980) in the Canary Islands. Over time, it has welcomed people from all over Europe — Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Spain — becoming a truly multicultural community of around 200 residents.
Originally, this place was called *Castillo de Papagayo*, but the name caused confusion with the Papagayo beaches in Playa Blanca, which also have a castle nearby. More than once, taxi drivers picking up tourists at the airport mistakenly took them south instead. To avoid these mix-ups, the name *Charco del Palo* was finally adopted — referring to the natural pool down to the right, named after the nickname of the land’s original owner.
Miguel shares a touching memory from his childhood, when he and his father would come to hunt near the mountains of Mala and visit the old restaurant La Tuneras, where neighbors gathered, farmers arrived with donkeys, or even on a camel and everyone shared stories — the same community spirit that still lives on today.

Today, Charco del Palo celebrates that legacy: a culture of freedom, respect, and companionship. Residents and visitors together are living examples of naturist coexistence and inspiration. Many local artists have found their muse here, their works reflecting the beauty and energy of this place.
Finally, Miguel introduces Alberto de León, consejal of Haría, who joins the celebration to honor this special community and remind everyone of the importance of protecting such a magical environment — one that enriches both the people and the island itself. Miguel also mentioned that we miss a ‘teleclub’ here in the village. A place to meet. Alberto will bring it along.
With joy and music, the festivities begin — a tribute to the spirit of Charco del Palo, where everyone belongs and life flows freely under the Lanzarote sun.
The band ‘Hey Chabón’ opened with a great concert.
There was a tapas and pastries competition – Jum and Beate won !
Also the Rummikub games in the garden of Jardin Tropical brought a lot of joy. The winner was Elly!
And we had a real acrobatic show, incredible.
The oldest members of the village were honored, and the face paintings were beautiful.
Saturday evening a lot of people danced with the music by the band ‘Los Magnéticos ‘.
