Heading for Winter Sun
November appears and with it a cooler feel to the mornings and evenings, but this is to be expected. The village is very busy, there are cars parked everywhere. The hire car market seems to have picked up again and prices are certainly getting back to sensible levels.
Good morning from Charco del Palo, it’s the 1st of November the sun is shining, the village is slowly filling up with people who want some winter sunshine. Let’s hope we get plenty of it. Numbers of tourist heading to the Canary Islands are well up on any previous figures, with Lanzarote in particular absolutely booming.

I read a rather worrying article the other day, that with the desalination plant working 24/7 the most water they can have as a reserve is 1 days water. So please be careful with a very scarce resource. Then some days later the tourist industry on the island are telling us that an extra 4.4 million seats on aircraft will be available over the winter period, it make me wonder if the infrastructure of the island will be able to cope!
Beautiful days here in Charco del Palo picture above proves that, we have had an amazing October with temperatures way above normal, then Saturday night 15th we had an amazing lightning storm, there were a few good rumbles of thunder and a little rain but it was the lightning that made the evening. And the following day the sun came out and has been with us ever since.
Village New
Over the last twelve years that the Nudelanza site and the Newsletter have been going we have built up a large data base of people who have either booked holidays through Wendy or have contacted me via the Newsletter. Many people thought when the Nudelanza web site closed Wendy would be finishing with the accommodation bookings, that was never the case. This last week I have been approached re the taking over of the newsletter, the lady in question is from Netherlands and her name is Tineke, if you have been here on holiday you would probably have seen her in the village. Tineke and her husband King have brought the house very close to the Monkey Rocks called Casa Rainbow by the car park area. Now we are having a few teething problems at the moment but we shall persevere. One major question that I must ask because of the data protection laws, if we get the change over to work, are you happy that I give your email address to Tineke, if not then please unsubscribe its that easy and I will delete your whole history. If I don’t hear from you then I am assuming you are ok with me passing your emails over.
I have had some feedback regarding the village and its mainly to do with Bars being open and closed, I have to say I am also very surprised that we are now into the busy time of the year and places are closing down for a few evenings. But then that is up to the owners of the bars, but I just wish they would think about the bigger picture, surely it’s not beyond the means of the owners to stagger the closing times. The other evening two of the main bars were closed, it also coincided with The Cantina being closed on there normal evening so the people on holiday basically had nowhere to go. Thats crazy at this time of the year. In saying that all the bars seem to be busy in the village and in Mala.
I have been sorting out some older photo’s and found these two, brings back a lot of memories from days past.
Out & About
Something I have been reading which is very surprising, that so far this year 48 people have drowned on the Canary Islands, Eight of them on Lanzarote. In the time I have lived here I can think of at least four people who have died by the Monkey Rocks and one in Padro Bay. So please if it’s rough stay out of the water. And mainly do not swim alone.
Whats going on at the Bulin in Guatiza??? For those of you who don’t know what I am talking about The Bulin is the bar on the right when traveling through Guatiza heading towards Arrecife, It’s normally open by 05.30 most mornings and is a very popular dropping of place for many locals. I have been informed that it’s having a facelift inside so we will have to wait and see, let’s hope not too long. It has of course now re-opened and looking nice and bright but still the same bar that many of us enjoy, long may it last.
Rental Car prices are slowly falling and although maybe not at pre Covid days they are becoming more affordable. At the moment Autoresien seem to be about the best value.

Someone asked me the other day what is my favourite part of Lanzarote? Well that is the easiest question to answer. For me it’s Haria and the surrounding area, I can loose myself for hours walking around not only the village but in particular the countryside. Years ago I set up a Geocache right on the top of the cliffs and it gets regular people walking to this spot, logging their visit on the Geocache web site, almost everyone gives it the wow factor. As you can see below they are not wrong.
If you are not sure what Geocaching is, it’s like a walk with a treasure hunt and it’s worldwide.
Something you don’t see everyday, but they are out there. Anyone for Pulpo?
Weighing in at 225kg this 3 mtr long Squid was pulled out of the sea, luckily for us it was found close to Tenerife and La Gomera which has a deep channel frequented by these large creatures. It is thought it was attacked by Pilot or Sperm Whales. Now that would make people jump around the Monkey Rocks!
I have been known to do a bit of walking, well the other day along with my walking friend the famous explorer Prof Neil Wheeler also the author of various walking and sociadad books dedicated to Lanzarote, we decided to explore the walkway that goes from Costa Teguise towards Arrecife. It’s generally very easy to follow but we took a detour and walked around the front of the Desalination plant where we came upon a beautiful small cottage within meters of the sea but it has the most amazing backdrop as you can see above. The walk is very easy and although the pathway does dissapear at one point in the dockside area it is easily picked up again. It’s a great way to spend a morning seeing parts of the island nobody would have any idea about.
Restaurant Review.
Casa Pedro – Playa Blanca
Never mind what some restaurant review sites say, this place has never disappointed us. We have been eating here for over thirty years and have almost certainly eaten here more times than any other restaurant on the island. Staff are good fun and Pedro himself is an institution in Playa Blanca having been there since the late 70s. See the large aerial photograph in his restaurant when Playa Blanca was just a small fishing village.
We prefer to eat outside at lunchtimes and inside (reserve a window table if you can) in the evenings. The fish and shellfish are fresh daily and we have enjoyed top quality white fish (halibut etc.) and shellfish (king prawns, lobster etc.). Also the local Canarian soup, Iberico ham and a King Prawns in Champagne dish are very good. Be guided by Pedro as to what he recommends on the day. Try a bottle of Mar de Frades Albarino – you will need to ask for it specially as it doesn’t appear on the normal list, but to the best of our knowledge it is always available.
Open Noon to 11.30 pm *(closed Thursday).
Price: ££+ (no cards).
